Jason Schwartzman–actor and musician extraordinaire–was, at one time, the drummer for California band Phantom Planet (of OC theme fame).
Then the man broke off and released his solo debut LP “Nighttiming” in 2007 under the band name “Coconut Records”, which was produced entirely by Mike Einzinger of Incubus.
This album sounds like a perfect mix of early Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beatles in their “Obla Di Obla Da” days. A perfect album from front to back with an abundance of feelings of reverie and love just out of reach.
My favorite song off the album is “West Coast,” and once I saw that the video was footage of the Gonz zipping around Germany being The Gonz, I fell in love with this song even more.
Schwartzman is a master at capturing the quintessential Southern California sound, and this song is utter perfection.
